Digging for a Backyard Pool
Pool and pond digging is the excavation for in-ground pools, plunge pools, hot tub pits, koi ponds and water features. It is one of the most common searches for excavators in the valley, and it is all about access and dirt. A typical pool produces a large volume of soil, and getting a machine into a fenced back yard on an older lot can take as much planning as the dig itself.
Working to the builder's layout
Most pool digs follow a layout from the pool builder: shape, depths, steps and over-dig for walls and plumbing. We cut to that layout and check grades as we go. For ponds, we work from your sketch or a landscaper's plan.
Spoil: keep it or haul it
Some of the soil can be used to shape the yard, build up a patio area or backfill around the pool. The rest has to go. HomeBlue puts hauling in Salt Lake City at $400 to $600 or more per truckload, so deciding early how much to keep saves money.
Groundwater and clay
In low parts of the valley, a deep end can reach groundwater. Clay soil also makes for slow drainage around the shell. We look at the lot's elevation and nearby conditions and plan for dewatering if needed.
Costs
HomeBlue estimates pool excavation in Salt Lake City at about $3,900 to $6,900 for roughly 2.5 days of digging in normal soil. HomeGuide lists pool digs at $1,000 to $5,000 in soft soil with easy access and $15,000 to $20,000 where access is hard or rock is present. Ponds are usually smaller: HomeGuide puts typical pond excavation at $300 to $3,200.
Protecting the yard
We lay out the access route, protect lawn and hardscape with mats, and restore fence panels we remove.
Ponds and water features
Koi ponds and water features are usually shallower than pools but need careful shaping: plant shelves, deeper zones for fish, and an overflow route so heavy rain or snowmelt does not flood the yard. We dig to your plan and leave the shape ready for liner and stone.
Equipment pad and lines
Pool equipment pads, plumbing trenches and electrical trenches are dug in the same mobilization when possible, saving a second visit.
Timing with the builder
Pool companies schedule shell work tightly. We confirm the layout, depths and dig date with the builder so the hole is ready when their crew arrives.
Removing an old pond
We also fill in ponds that owners no longer want, removing liners and compacting fill so the area can be planted or paved.

How It Works
1. Access plan
We measure gates, check slopes and plan the route in.
2. Layout
Pool builder or owner marks the shape; Blue Stakes marks utilities.
3. Dig
Excavated to depth with spoil staged or loaded.
4. Haul and restore
Extra soil hauled, access route restored.

Pool & Pond Digging Questions
Can a machine fit into my back yard?
Compact excavators fit through openings about 5 to 6 feet wide. Narrower access may mean removing a fence panel.
How much dirt comes out of a pool?
A lot. Even a modest pool fills many truckloads. We plan how much to reuse on site before we start.
Do you dig for pool builders?
Yes. We work to the builder's layout and schedule.
Can you dig a pond with shelves for plants?
Yes. We shape shelves and depths to your plan.
